Dig Dug – 1982 – Namco

Yet another arcade classic, developed and published by Namco in 1982. Digdug was ported to many consoles at the time and is still a favourite of mine to this day. I fondly remember playing this on my Atar VCS 2600 in 1988.

The objective of the game is to dig your way underground, seeking out pesky monsters and destroying them using your trusty hand pump. Dont get to close as the monster will kill you. Make use of rocks to eliminate monsters for extra points!

Dig Dug Trivia

The actual name of the protagonist is Taizo Hori, and is the father of Susumu Hori, the main character in the Mr. Driller series. Many American gamers learned of his real name via the (Japan-only) PlayStation 2 game Namco x Capcom and the Nintendo DS game Mr. Driller Drill Spirits, where he is also a playable character. After the release of Dig Dug in 1982, Namco Engineers went to arcades to watch their new game being played. They noticed there were two completely separate groups of people. One group enjoyed blowing the monsters up with the air pump. The other group enjoyed killing the monsters by dropping rocks on them! (ref:http://www.edcollins.com/digdug/index.html)
